Following his conversation with Zelenskyy, Fico confirmed that he is not opposed to Ukraine's accession to the EU

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has shared his account of a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The post was published on Fico’s Facebook page.

“A few minutes ago, I spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President V. Zelenskyy. Although we have different views on some issues, we share a common interest in good and friendly relations between the Slovak Republic and Ukraine. I confirmed that Slovakia supports Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, as Slovakia wants Ukraine to be a stable and democratic country as our neighbor,” the Slovak leader wrote.

He added that the leaders agreed to meet briefly on May 4 in Yerevan at the Eurasian Economic Union summit.

“We will continue our work in the format of joint government meetings, visiting each other in our countries’ capitals. I also emphasized that no peace agreement in the military conflict with the Russian Federation is possible without the consent of the Ukrainian side,” Fico fully confirmed his pro-Ukrainian stance.

Recall that, according to Zelenskyy, the parties discussed bilateral relations and further cooperation. Both leaders are interested in ensuring that these relations remain strong.

Earlier, the European Parliament supported a document calling on the European Commission to freeze payments to Slovakia from the EU budget due to risks to the rule of law and the EU’s financial interests.
