South Korea plans payments for marriage registration, foreigners' status undecided
South Korea plans to introduce a cash payment from January 1, 2027, for couples registering their marriage. Each spouse is expected to receive 500,000 won, or about $370. Authorities have not yet decided whether foreign nationals living in the country will be eligible for this support.
Payment for marriage registration
The program is intended to encourage marriage and family formation. A couple registering a marriage is expected to receive a total of 1 million won — 500,000 won for each spouse.
As Korea Herald reports, South Korea's Ministry of Gender Equality and Family on Tuesday presented a program budget of 166.3 billion won.

Replacing a tax credit
The new cash subsidy is expected to replace a tax credit for marriage. This tax benefit was available to both South Korean citizens and foreign residents of the country.
However, the final conditions for foreigners' participation in the new program have not yet been determined. The report does not specify when authorities are expected to make a decision on their eligibility for the payment.
