Nikita Zhuravel, who was beaten by Kadyrov’s son, disappeared after being transferred to a penal colony

Nikita Zhuravel, who was beaten by Kadyrov’s son, disappeared after being transferred to a penal colony

Nikita Zhuravel, who was convicted of burning the Quran and had previously been beaten by the son of the Chechen leader, has not been in contact since late December of last year.

His defense team and relatives are expressing serious concern for the young man’s life and health, as the time taken to transport him to his place of punishment has significantly exceeded the usual norms.

The last letter from Mykyta Zhuravel arrived from Ulyanovsk on December 24, after which all communication with him ceased.

Attorney Andriy Sabinin officially stated that as of today, neither the family nor the defense knows where exactly the convict is located or what condition he is in.

The situation involving a prolonged “disappearance” during transport is unusual even for the Russian penal system, where loss of contact with prisoners is a common practice.

By comparison, during the transport of well-known political prisoners to the most remote parts of the country, periods without information typically did not exceed a month.

For example, Alexei Navalny was out of contact for 19 days during his transfer to Kharp, and Mikhail Khodorkovsky for 13 days.

As a reminder, a court in the Chechen city of Grozny sentenced Mykyta Zhuravlya, a Ukrainian native living in Volgograd, to 3.5 years in a penal colony after he was beaten by Ramzan Kadyrov’s son for burning a Quran.

Additionally, a Russian occupation court sentenced an Azov fighter to 22 years in prison for fabricated crimes.
