Romanian tax officials are on strike over a pay law

In Romania, thousands of employees of the tax service and regional public finance administrations have called a nationwide strike. The reason for the mass protest is a new law on unified pay.

According to the protesters, the proposed legislative changes will lead to a significant reduction in their bonus payments—losses could reach up to 4,000 lei (approximately 760 euros).

Due to the staff walkout, district financial administration offices in many regions of the country are currently closed to visitors. Protesters have hung posters on the windows and doors of these institutions with slogans such as “Rebellion for Dignity!” and “A Day Without Finance.” In addition to tax officials, employees of regional pension funds and staff of some courts have also actively joined the protest movement.

The main demand of the financial sector strikers is an immediate review of regulations and the introduction of a new, fair pay scale. To resolve the acute crisis, union leaders have already headed to the Romanian Ministry of Labor for official negotiations, where they will attempt to find a compromise on the controversial bill.

This was reported by the Digi24 television channel.
