Poland is preparing an extradition request for Ziobro from the United States
Poland has asked the U.S. Immigration Service to explain the grounds on which former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro is staying in the country. At the same time, Warsaw is finalizing an official request for his extradition.
The Polish Ministry of Justice reported that the document is almost complete. It is currently being translated into English.
Polish Justice Minister Waldemar Żurek has contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to obtain information regarding the legal basis for the presence of former Polish Justice Minister and former Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro on U.S. soil. The letter was addressed to ICE Acting Director David J. Venturelli. In it, the Polish side asks for an explanation of the grounds on which Ziobro is currently in the U.S. “We are very interested in finding this out,” Żurek wrote.
According to the minister, the U.S. side was also informed about the criminal cases against the former Polish official. Żurek noted that Zbigniew Ziobro faces 26 criminal charges. In addition, Poland has already revoked his passports. Also, according to the minister, Hungary has revoked the refugee status it had previously granted to Ziobro under the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
At the same time, Polish authorities are finalizing the paperwork for his return to the country. As Żurek reported, the extradition request is practically ready. The document is nearly 300 pages long and is currently being translated into English. “The full text of the request may be ready as early as next week,” the minister said.
Once the translation is complete, the Polish prosecutor’s office will officially submit the documents to the U.S. side. The extradition request will be sent in accordance with the current extradition treaty between Poland and the United States. So far, the U.S. side has not commented on the Polish Ministry of Justice’s request and has not indicated whether it has received the relevant letter. The minister reported this on social media platform X.
