12 people arrested in Britain over A66 crash that killed seven
In the United Kingdom, police arrested 12 people as part of an investigation into the circumstances of a crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough, in which seven people were killed, including two police officers. As The Guardian reports, those arrested include nine men and three women aged between 19 and 61.
Suspicions in the case
According to Cleveland Police, the detainees are suspected of a number of offences, including possession of firearms and involvement in the activities of an organised crime group. These suspicions are linked to the investigation into events preceding the fatal crash.
Police said they received reports of two cars being driven dangerously on 22 August. The Volkswagen Passat that collided with the police car of constables Matthew Blades and Tom Clough had previously been sought in connection with a Volvo XC60.

Cars with cloned registration plates
According to law enforcement officials, the Volvo XC60 was seen ramming properties in the Middlesbrough area. Both vehicles had cloned registration plates, but they were captured by an automatic number plate recognition system. The Volvo XC60 was later found and seized in Middlesbrough.
Police also said that four of the five people in the Volkswagen Passat, including three teenagers, had previous convictions. Law enforcement officials noted that they currently have no evidence that the events of Friday night and Saturday morning were filmed for TikTok.
