More than 20 Marvel actors support campaign to free Marwan Barghouti

More than 20 actors who appeared in Marvel films have joined the Freedom for Marwan campaign calling for the release of Marwan Barghouti. This was reported in an opinion column in the Jerusalem Post. Among the campaign participants, the author names Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton.

Campaign for release

According to the column, Barghouti's family launched the campaign at the end of 2025 in coordination with organizations in the United Kingdom. Before the new group of celebrities joined, the petition had already been signed by around 200 cultural figures.

The author notes that campaign supporters compare Barghouti to Nelson Mandela. The column says that Barghouti is serving five life sentences for organizing attacks in which, according to the publication, four Israelis were killed. It also describes him as the leader of Tanzim, one of the paramilitary wings of the Fatah movement, and the founder of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades.

Polling data

As the Jerusalem Post author writes, the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research in Ramallah regularly records Barghouti as the leading potential candidate for president of the Palestinian Authority. In a poll published last month, he could receive 54% of the vote, ahead of Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, while incumbent Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas could receive 14%.

According to the column, elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council are scheduled for November. The author writes that Barghouti has support among Fatah supporters and also suggests that Hamas may view him as a potentially dependent president if the group helps secure his election.
