More than 80% of Australian teens are getting around the ban on social media
Despite the ban on social media use by children under 16, more than 80% of Australian teenagers continue to use such platforms. This is according to the findings of a study by the government regulator eSafety.
Before the restrictions were introduced, about 86% of the teenagers surveyed used at least one of the prohibited platforms. Three months after the law took effect, this figure had dropped to just over 81%, and 58% of children reported logging into social media daily or even more frequently.
eSafety noted that most teenagers were able to keep their old accounts or create new ones due to insufficient age verification. The regulator is currently checking whether Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube are complying with the requirements.
At the same time, more than 65% of those surveyed said the ban had not affected their mental health. Researchers also noted a rise in the popularity of messaging apps and online games among children and warned that restrictions could have unpredictable consequences, including reducing parents’ awareness of their children’s online activities.
