Isle Royale wolf population has over 80% chance of surviving 20 years — Mongabay

The wolf population on Isle Royale in Michigan, United States, has more than an 80% probability of persisting for 20 years. This assessment was provided in a study published in the journal Conservation Science and Practice, Mongabay reports. At the same time, researchers note that the population faces challenges from inbreeding and isolation.

Wolf relocation

In 2016, only two inbred wolves remained on the island. During 2018–2019, officials brought 19 new wolves to Isle Royale.

According to the study, despite the high estimate of the population's chances of survival, inbreeding remains a significant problem. The wolves' isolation on the island is an additional challenge.

Decline in the moose population

After the study was completed, the number of wolves increased. At the same time, the population of moose, which are a key food source for wolves, declined sharply. This raises additional concerns about the state of the island's ecosystem.
