Mediators are trying to resume negotiations with Iran before the ceasefire expires on April 21
Pakistani, Egyptian, and Turkish mediators will continue their contacts with the U.S. and Iran in the coming days to bridge differences and reach an agreement to end the war before the ceasefire expires.
Axios reports this, citing a regional source and a U.S. official. Diplomats hope to hold a new round of talks by April 21, as all parties still believe an agreement is possible.
President Donald Trump is currently considering the possibility of resuming attacks on infrastructure targets in Iran if the current naval blockade does not force the country to change course. The U.S. side seeks to deprive Tehran of the ability to use the Strait of Hormuz as a tool of pressure in the negotiation process. The main points of contention during the previous 21-hour meeting in Pakistan concerned the nuclear program, specifically U.S. demands for a complete halt to uranium enrichment and the amount of Iranian assets to be unfrozen.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that a deal was within reach, although U.S. officials did not confirm that the parties were that close to a final agreement. Despite the differences, Vice President J.D. Vance left the door open for dialogue, hoping the Iranian delegation would return to the talks. Turkey and Egypt continue active telephone consultations with representatives from the White House and Tehran to coordinate next steps.
