US Ambassador Michelle Steel meets South Korean defense minister
US Ambassador to South Korea Michelle Steel met with Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back on Thursday at the Defense Ministry headquarters in Yongsan. It was her first meeting with the country’s defense chief since she took office in late July, The Korea Herald reports.
Meeting in Yongsan
Steel arrived at the ministry together with Gen. Xavier Brunson, commander of US Forces Korea. The meeting continued the US ambassador’s contacts with South Korean officials.

Operational control
Steel and Ahn Gyu-back were expected to discuss key issues in the US-South Korea alliance. Possible topics included Seoul’s ongoing efforts to regain wartime operational control from the United States.
Last month, Steel also held separate meetings with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan.
