The Embassy of the Republic of South Africa in Washington held an event involving players from the national Springboks rugby team to showcase the country’s strengths to US officials, businesses and media. This was reported in an editorial by TimesLIVE.

The event was organized by Ambassador Roelf Meyer and embassy staff. Participants included representatives of the US government, private companies and local media. South Africa was represented by rugby players Aphelele Fassi, Marco van Staden, Grant Williams, Paul de Villiers and Kurt-Lee Arendse.
South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation described the event as “diplomacy of the highest order” and said its purpose was to “build bridges” with Americans. The meeting took place two days before the Springboks’ match against New Zealand’s national team, the All Blacks, in Baltimore.
