The Ukrainian Embassy in Israel helped secure the release of a Ukrainian man after nearly a month in custody
The Embassy of Ukraine in the State of Israel helped secure the release of a Ukrainian citizen who had been detained by Israeli law enforcement authorities for the purpose of deportation.
This was reported by the diplomatic mission.
According to the embassy, on April 29, 2026, the Ukrainian, who was in Israel under collective protection, was detained directly at his workplace. The basis for the arrest was allegedly information about his ties to “hostile entities.”
At the same time, as the diplomats emphasized, neither the detainee himself nor his lawyers were provided with any evidence or documents. The case file contained only a reference to a classified document from “security agencies,” which was not included in the proceedings.
Following the incident, the Ukrainian Embassy urgently contacted the Israeli authorities demanding an explanation regarding the detention of the Ukrainian citizen.
Honorary Consul of Ukraine Oleksandr Zernopolskyi and the detainee’s lawyer joined the defense, filing an appeal against the actions of Israeli law enforcement.
Following the review of the case, the Israeli Ministry of the Interior officially abandoned its intention to deport the Ukrainian. The court upheld the defense’s position and found no grounds for continuing to hold the man in custody.
The embassy noted that thanks to judicial oversight and fact-checking, it was possible to prevent abuse of power and identify shortcomings in the work of Israel’s immigration services.
After nearly a month in custody, the Ukrainian citizen was released.
Diplomats urged Ukrainians currently in Israel who might find themselves in a similar situation to immediately contact the Embassy of Ukraine via the hotline: (+972) 54 667 67 82 or by email: [email protected].
As a reminder, on May 13, a meeting was held at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Tel Aviv between Ukraine’s Ambassador to Israel Yevhen Korniychuk and representatives of the Ukrainian community and volunteers. Participants discussed priorities for further cooperation, the work of the diaspora, and consular issues.
