Congresswoman Omar spoke out against some of the sanctions against Ukraine
Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar became the only Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives to vote against the Ukraine Support Act, explaining her decision by citing her disagreement with some of the sanctions included in the bill. She expressed support for Ukraine but opposed an approach that, in her view, harms the civilian population.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of the U.S. Democratic Party, who represents the state of Minnesota, explained her position after becoming the only Democrat in the House of Representatives to vote against the Ukraine Support Act.
Omar emphasized that her position does not constitute a withdrawal of support for Ukraine and does not negate her condemnation of the Russian invasion. “I have always supported and will continue to support the Ukrainian people, and I unequivocally condemn Putin’s illegal and brutal invasion. I voted against the Ukraine Support Act because of the inclusion of broad economic sanctions. Such sanctions do not achieve their stated goals and cause real suffering to ordinary people,” she stated.
According to the congresswoman, she opposes war as such, but does not support measures that, in her view, could harm civilians rather than Russia’s political leadership. “Opposing Russian aggression does not mean we must support policies that punish ordinary civilians who did not ask for this war. I remain committed to supporting diplomacy, peace, and justice for the Ukrainian people who have suffered from this horrific conflict. But I could not in good conscience support a bill that wages economic war against innocent civilians,” Omar added.
Her vote was the only one among Democrats in the House of Representatives to oppose the bill during the final vote, although, as noted, she had supported the Ukraine Support Act during earlier procedural stages.
In U.S. political circles, such positions elicit a mixed reaction, as some Democrats view sanctions as a necessary tool to pressure Russia, while others focus on the potential economic consequences for ordinary citizens. Despite the criticism, Omar stated that she continues to support diplomatic efforts and the search for ways to end the war in Ukraine. This was reported by Ukrainian journalist Ostap Yaryshyn in Washington.
As a reminder, the United States and Europe will significantly tighten sanctions against Russia if Russian dictator Vladimir Putin does not engage in peace talks with Ukraine “in a spirit of goodwill.”
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he would impose sanctions against Russia if negotiations with Ukraine fail. The new restrictions will be devastating for Russia.
