The Slovenian Parliament has approved the new Cabinet

In Slovenia, the parliament approved the new government led by Janez Janša, and for the first time in the country’s history, the Cabinet is composed exclusively of center-right parties. The decision was supported by 49 lawmakers, while 30 voted against it. The new government began work immediately after the vote.

The Slovenian Parliament has approved a new government led by Janez Janša, and this decision is already being called a political turning point in the country’s history, as for the first time the Cabinet is composed exclusively of representatives of center-right forces. Following the vote in the National Assembly, 49 deputies supported the new government, while 30 voted against it; the Cabinet immediately began its work and held its first meeting on the very day of its approval.

The formation of the new government took place against a backdrop of noticeable political tension linked to statements by the new parliamentary leadership. In particular, the head of the legislature, Zoran Stevanović, announced his intention to visit Moscow and proposed holding a referendum on Slovenia’s possible withdrawal from NATO, which sparked lively debate in the country’s political circles. “I would like to build bridges and cooperate well with all countries, regardless of the wall that was built between the West and the East. So I plan to visit Moscow in the near future,” Stevanović said, commenting on his international plans.

He also confirmed that he plans to initiate a referendum on the country’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, emphasizing the need to fulfill previous political promises. At the same time, the politician spoke in favor of the gradual lifting of sanctions against Russia, although he denied holding pro-Russian views, emphasizing a desire for a “balance of interests.”

Slovenia has been a member of NATO since 2004, when the country, following a nationwide referendum, supported accession to the Alliance, and since then, the government in Ljubljana has adhered to a Euro-Atlantic course, participating in joint initiatives and international missions. New political statements within the country could mark the beginning of a discussion regarding the state’s long-term foreign policy course. This is reported by STA.
