The minimum pension in Hungary has remained unchanged for 19 years; how much do retirees receive?

The minimum old-age pension in Hungary in 2026 has remained unchanged for 19 years. Despite this long period without a review of benefit amounts, only a small portion of citizens receive this pension.

Typically, the minimum pension is granted to people who spent most of their working lives abroad and managed to accumulate only a small amount of insurance coverage in Hungary.

It is noted that the minimum old-age pension in Hungary has not changed since 2008 and stands at 28,500 forints (about 4,000 UAH). It was originally introduced to define the minimum amount of a full old-age pension—that is, to set a lower limit below which a full pension cannot fall.

Today, this amount is typically received by those who have worked abroad for most of their lives and have managed to accumulate only a short period of insurance coverage in Hungary. In this case, in addition to the Hungarian minimum pension, the person may also receive a pension from abroad.
