Spain is set to be hit by a new heat wave amid widespread wildfires
Spain, which continues to battle massive wildfires, is bracing for a new wave of extreme heat. It is set to begin as early as Wednesday and could further complicate the fire situation.
The situation remains particularly dire near Madrid, where large-scale fires are already posing serious challenges for rescue workers. High temperatures could contribute to the further spread of the fires.
The Spanish National Meteorological Service (Aemet) has announced that a new heat wave is expected in the country starting in the middle of the week, marking the fourth such event of the summer of 2026. The hot spell will begin on July 29 and is tentatively expected to last until Sunday, August 2.
“Weather conditions for fighting fires will worsen as a new heatwave begins, bringing low humidity and, in some areas, strong gusty winds,” said Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo.
According to the latest estimates, fires in the provinces of Madrid, Ávila, and Toledo have devastated 77,000 hectares of land and led to the evacuation or movement restrictions for 90,000 people.
Neighboring France is also suffering from wildfires, where the number of evacuees has exceeded 200,000. The situation is most critical in the Gironde department in the southwest.
