A drought has destroyed more than 80% of Romanian farmers' crops

A drought has destroyed more than 80% of Romanian farmers' crops

In southern Romania, farmers have suffered significant losses due to a prolonged drought and a sharp drop in the Danube’s water level. Because of the water shortage, farmers are unable to fully irrigate their fields, resulting in the loss of more than 80% of the harvest.

The situation has been exacerbated by the Danube’s water level dropping to a historic low, making river transportation of produce impossible.

In particular, farmers in the Dolj region purchased irrigation systems designed to draw water from the Danube.

Due to the drop in the river’s water level, the pumps cannot operate, resulting in the loss of most crops.

According to representatives of the Romanian Chamber of Agriculture, many agricultural enterprises are facing bankruptcy, and farmers are forced to shred the unusable harvest right in the fields.

Logistical Collapse on the Danube

Due to the lack of water in the river, the movement of cargo barges has come to a complete halt, leaving grain elevators overflowing.

Rerouting cargo from river barges to rail or road transport doubles farmers’ logistics costs amid high fuel prices.
