Video: Floods in India Have Claimed the Lives of 78 People
In the Indian state of Assam, the death toll from widespread flooding has risen to 78. More than 300,000 people remain in the disaster zone, and meteorologists are warning of further heavy rainfall.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), on Wednesday the death toll from this year’s floods in the state rose to 78, while 300,031 people in seven districts of the state continue to face dire conditions.
The Meteorological Department has warned that new heavy rains could exacerbate waterlogging, flooding, and flash floods, slow down traffic, and increase the risk of localized landslides in vulnerable areas.
It is noted that floodwaters have caused damage and continue to affect 21 districts and 551 villages, while 21,523.08 hectares of cropland remain flooded.
Among the affected districts, Charaideo was hit hardest, with 137,561 people affected, followed by Sivasagar (84,600) and Jorhat (49,911).
The ASDMA reported that more than 16,500 displaced people have found shelter in 71 relief camps, and another 72,000 people are receiving assistance through 30 humanitarian aid distribution centers.
Medical and veterinary teams, as well as numerous rescue services, continue relief and rescue operations in the affected areas.
The floods have also caused significant damage to infrastructure, including embankments, roads, homes, schools, and other public property.
ASDMA added that more than 11,000 animals were swept away by the floodwaters, and another 17,000 head of livestock were affected.

Although water levels are gradually receding after the flooding, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy rains and downpours accompanied by thunderstorms from July 30 through August 1 in parts of the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland.
