A fire in Belgium was stopped 300 meters from the German border

A large-scale wildfire in Belgium’s High Fens Nature Reserve has stopped advancing toward Germany. According to Deutsche Welle, the fire had previously come within about 300 meters of the German border.

Overnight in the town of Monschau in the Eifel region, about 30 residents were evacuated from 17 homes. Temporary shelter was set up for them at a nearby school. A spokesperson for the local fire department said that the meadows between the fire’s epicenter and residential buildings were doused with water for several hours to contain the spread of the flames.

On Monday morning, according to DW, the fire stopped advancing toward Germany as weather conditions became more favorable for firefighting. In Belgium, the fire has burned about 3,000 hectares of land.

At the same time, low water levels in German rivers are forcing cargo ships to reduce their cargo volumes, which could affect supplies to the construction industry. Industry associations have warned of possible shortages of certain materials, including sand, gravel, bitumen, aggregate, natural stone, fuel, and mineral construction waste. Tim-Oliver Müller, Executive Director of the German Construction Industry Federation, stated that a large-scale halt to construction is unlikely, but the risks of shortages, delays, and rising logistics costs are increasing.
