North Korea says it tested upgraded rocket system — Asharq Al-Awsat

North Korea conducted a test launch of an upgraded 240mm guided multiple launch rocket system on Tuesday. This was reported by Asharq Al-Awsat, citing the state-run KCNA agency.

Declared missile range

According to KCNA, the test confirmed the accuracy and declared specifications of extended-range rockets equipped with an autonomous high-precision guidance system.

Pyongyang said the rockets can strike targets at distances of up to 100 kilometers in trajectory flight mode and up to 115 kilometers in combined gliding flight mode.

KCNA also claims that the development of these munitions will significantly change the readiness of North Korea's firepower assets along the country's southern border — the border with South Korea.

Strengthening forces at the border

According to KCNA, the test was overseen by Pak Jong Chon, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission. He stressed the need to concentrate the most lethal and destructive strike forces along the southern border.

South Korea's Defense Ministry did not immediately comment in response to a Reuters request. Pyongyang continues to modernize its tactical and conventional arsenal, which it intends to deploy near the border with South Korea. In June, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un observed tests of key types of weapons, including the upgraded rocket system and tactical missiles, which, according to the country, are also intended for the defense of the southern border.
