Primaries in Florida and Alaska: In Florida, redistricting changed the course of the race

Primaries will be held in Florida and Alaska on August 18, and their results will influence the outcome of the U.S. congressional midterm elections this fall. Republicans maintain a slim majority in Congress, according to The Guardian.

In Alaska, incumbent Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, an ally of President Donald Trump, is running for a third term. One of his opponents is retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. Republicans claim that the candidate with the same last name is allegedly running on behalf of the Democrats to confuse voters. Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. denies this.

Former Representative Mary Peltola is also in the race. She was the first Alaska Native woman elected to Congress, and if she wins in November, she could become the first Alaska Native woman to serve as a U.S. senator.

In Florida, a redistricting process carried out with Republican involvement has changed the landscape of the race for the House of Representatives. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was first elected to Congress in 2004, is running in the state’s new 20th district in Broward County. Her previous district became more favorable to Republicans after the redistricting.

Wasserman Schultz has been criticized by activists for running in a district that has historically been predominantly Black. Her opponents include rapper Luther “Ankle Luke” Campbell and former Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-Mccormick. Cherfilus-McCormick faced criminal charges of embezzling $5 million in disaster relief funds. She denies any wrongdoing and resigned her seat in April ahead of her potential expulsion from Congress.

Politico also reported, citing Palm Beach County records, that Trump voted by mail in the Republican primary in Florida. According to The New York Times, the White House confirmed that the president voted by mail.
