British Prime Minister Approved New Measures Regarding Oil Production in the North Sea
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer raised the possibility of expanding oil and gas production in the North Sea. These remarks came after his conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly advocated for more active use of the region’s energy resources.
The head of the British government emphasized that London “cannot ignore” the North Sea’s natural resources.
His statement came after the U.S. president said on Wednesday that he had received assurances from Bernham regarding the possibility of oil production in the North Sea.
“He said one very good thing. He said he’s going to open up oil drilling in the North Sea. If he does that, you’ll become a rich country,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
The British prime minister did not directly confirm the U.S. president’s remarks.
“During our phone call last Monday, I noted that I would take a pragmatic approach to the North Sea, and that remains my intention for the future,” Bernham said.
“There are resources there. When people are in a difficult situation, you can’t ignore it, and that’s why I pointed this out to the president,” he added.
Permits for oil drilling in the North Sea were one of the points of contention between the U.S. and Britain during the premiership of Burnham’s predecessor, Keir Starmer. Trump claimed that he had repeatedly tried to persuade Starmer to take this step but had failed.
