Spain’s Prime Minister Sánchez urges support for urgent housing measures — Anadolu Agency
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged parliamentary parties to support urgent measures to ease the housing crisis. During the Premios Vanguardia 2026 ceremony, he said the government would submit a royal decree-law containing urgent housing measures to the Council of Ministers.
Appeal to Congress
Sánchez called on parliamentary groups to make a final effort to pass the package in Congress, acting responsibly. According to him, the government had prepared the initiatives through dialogue and negotiations, taking into account proposals from political forces willing to take part in the process.
The prime minister cited the example of an 87-year-old woman who had paid rent for the same home in one district of Madrid for 70 years but was evicted. He said that housing decisions concern people, households and their lives.

Protests in Madrid
According to Anadolu Agency, around 600 people continued camping in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square on Monday following the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal. Her monthly pension is 1,400 euros, while rent and bills cost approximately 500 euros per month.
The real estate company that purchased the home in 2018 sought to raise the rent to 2,650 euros. During negotiations, it lowered its demand to 1,650 euros. Police evicted the woman on Wednesday despite protests by participants who tried to prevent it.
Madrid’s Tenants’ Union is demanding open-ended rental contracts, controls on rent increases and stronger protections against evictions. The government is seeking to agree on a housing package after previous legislative initiatives were not approved by parliament in July.
