U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio demanded that the Iranian delegation leave New York after talks between Washington and Tehran reached an impasse, Axios reports. Meanwhile, Iran stated that its representatives had left according to a previously scheduled itinerary.
On Monday, September 28, the White House was still hoping for progress in the talks, but by the end of the day it became clear that the parties had been unable to reach an agreement. Following this, the U.S. Mission to the UN informed the Iranian delegation that it must leave New York immediately.
Secretary of State Rubio expelled the Iranian delegation, which had stayed there too long. “The UN General Assembly has ended, so it’s time for them to leave,
” said the U.S. official.
A few hours later, the delegation headed to the airport, and Araghchi flew from New York to Doha.
The Iranian side denied that they had in fact been expelled from the U.S. Iran’s Permanent Mission to the UN stated that the delegation left New York in accordance with the original schedule, which had been communicated to the U.S. side in advance.
