The Canadian Prime Minister will be the first non-European leader to attend the European Political Community summit

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will attend the European Political Community summit, which will take place on May 4, 2026, in Yerevan.

This was announced by European Council President António Costa on his X account, noting that the invitation was sent jointly with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This marks a historic precedent for the forum, as previously only representatives of European countries had been involved in the discussions.

António Costa emphasized that Canada is a key strategic ally with whom Europe is building a global alliance to defend peace and multilateralism. The North American country’s participation in the summit signals an expansion of the community’s scope to address global security and economic challenges that extend beyond the region. It is expected that Carney’s visit to the Armenian capital will strengthen coordination between the EU and Canada on issues of stability and the protection of the international legal order.

The European Political Community was established as a platform for coordination among EU countries and their neighbors, yet Canada’s invitation demonstrates a new level of transatlantic integration. Against the backdrop of Russia’s aggressive policies and destabilization in various parts of the world, engaging like-minded partners from across the ocean has become a mechanism for strengthening collective security. The main topics of the upcoming meeting in Yerevan will be energy resilience, shared prosperity, and countering hybrid threats.
