The Latvian Prime Minister plans to review trade relations with the UK and Russia

Latvia’s new prime minister has called for an end to the country’s trade dependence on the United Kingdom, describing it as “unnecessary from a security standpoint.” At the same time, he acknowledged the difficulty some sectors face in quickly withdrawing from the Russian market.

The head of the Latvian government emphasized that current trade ties with the UK could constitute “an unnecessary dependency that only exacerbates the situation.”

“I am speaking from a security perspective,” he stated.

According to the prime minister, he will instruct Foreign Minister Baiba Braze to explore possible options for changing trade policy.

At the same time, the politician acknowledged that a number of sectors, particularly the pharmaceutical industry, will not be able to quickly shift from the Russian market to other markets, despite companies’ existing plans.

He also suggested that potential restrictions on the export of Latvian products may require additional decisions at the EU level.

Kulberga was appointed Prime Minister of Latvia on May 28. In his address to the Saeima, he stated that his government’s priorities would be security, the economy, and public administration reform.

This was reported by the publication Delfi.
