In Venezuela, a man who spent 8 days trapped under 140 metric tons of debris was rescued

In Venezuela, an international rescue team successfully rescued Hernán Gil alive after he had been trapped under the rubble of a building for eight days following the twin earthquakes that struck on June 24.

The man was freed from under 140 metric tons of debris more than 100 hours after search teams first pinpointed his exact location. At the time of the disaster, Gil was on duty in a small concrete booth in the parking garage basement of the Galerias Playa Grande shopping center in Catia la Mar, and this structure formed a protective space that saved him from being crushed. So far, nearly 2,300 people have been officially confirmed dead as a result of the disaster, and tens of thousands remain missing.

Hundreds of specialists from Venezuela, Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico, Portugal, and the United States were brought in to carry out the extremely complex technical operation of clearing narrow passages through the rubble. Rescuers managed to establish visual contact with the man using a microcamera, provided him with a protective mask, dust goggles, and water, and connected him to an IV drip. According to Red Cross representatives, the victim miraculously avoided serious injuries, remained in stable condition, actively communicated with the rescue teams, and asked about his family.
