The Lithuanian Prime Minister proposed removing Lomonosov from the school curriculum and adding Shevchenko
Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius has asked the Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports to review the general education curricula approved in 2022. He called for the removal of works by Mikhail Lomonosov from the curriculum and the inclusion of works by Taras Shevchenko.
According to “European Truth,” citing Delfi, Sinkevičius stated that Lithuanian schoolchildren should not be taught patriotism and citizenship based on the works of authors whose creative output is linked to Russian imperial ideology. The report notes that Lomonosov glorified Russia’s imperial wars.

According to the Lithuanian prime minister, Shevchenko’s works could help Lithuanian youth better understand the identity of the Ukrainian people and the literary works that shaped it.
The curricula, updated in 2022, had previously been criticized for their list of recommended reading. Critics pointed out that it included more Russian authors than previous curricula, while Ukrainian literature was not represented. The Lithuanian Ministry of Education, Science, and Sports emphasized that studying the works of Russian authors is not mandatory, and teachers may choose works by authors from other countries.
