Pakistan’s prime minister may meet Iran’s president in New York — Dawn

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif may meet Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York, United States, on September 24. Diplomatic sources told Dawn that the talks could take place amid Islamabad’s efforts to facilitate the resumption of dialogue between the United States and Iran.

Mediation channels

According to the publication, Pakistan is maintaining a parallel communication channel with Tehran, while Qatar is conducting direct shuttle diplomacy between the American and Iranian delegations in New York. These efforts are aimed at preserving contacts between Washington and Tehran.

US special envoy Steve Witkoff said that mediators shuttled between the American and Iranian delegations during lengthy discussions on Tuesday. Qatar also confirmed cooperation with Pakistan to reduce tensions between Washington and Tehran and advance dialogue.

Meetings on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly

Shehbaz Sharif’s address to the UN General Assembly was rescheduled to 00:30 on Friday, Pakistani time. Separately, the Pakistani prime minister met with International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

During the meeting, Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the IMF-backed reform program. He said progress had been made in ensuring fiscal discipline, reforming the tariff system and privatization, as well as in the country’s transition to economic recovery despite regional instability.
