Israeli students take first two places at Fixperts Awards — Jerusalem Post

In Israel, two projects by students of the Holon Institute of Technology took first and second place at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design Fixperts Awards 2026. The program brings students together with people with disabilities to create practical solutions to everyday problems, the Jerusalem Post reports.

A bicycle for Ziv

First place went to the Ziv's Bike project, developed by Shai Scheinfeld and Roy After for five-year-old Ziv Cohen. The boy suffered a stroke at the age of four months and has hypertonia in his left arm and leg.

The students adapted the bicycle so that Ziv could ride independently without adult assistance. They installed an adjustable pedal that secures the child’s foot, as well as a handlebar extension for better control.

A device for breathing exercises

Second place went to the Breathing Training for Yarin project, created by Noga Tzur and Uri David for 11-year-old Yarin Mosseri. The boy was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, developmental delay and epilepsy. To learn speech, he needed to practise controlled exhalation.

The students’ development consists of a device that supports Yarin’s posture during sessions and a set of interchangeable mouthpieces for different exercises. Project supervisor Professor Gad Charni of the HIT Faculty of Design said that the victory was international recognition of the quality of work the institute has been carrying out for more than ten years.
