President Mahama to honor engineer regiment with Order of the Companion of the Volta
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama said that the 48th Engineer Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will be honored with the Order of the Companion of the Volta for clearing the right of way for the Accra—Kumasi expressway ahead of schedule. He announced this on September 14 during the handover of the cleared route to the government in Kwaso, Ashanti Region, MyJoyOnline reports.
Route cleared in 19 weeks
The engineer regiment cleared 175.6 kilometers of the route in 19 weeks, although 20 weeks had been allocated for the work. According to Mahama, the military completed the task one week ahead of schedule.

The work covered the route from Ablekuma in the Greater Accra Region to Sewua in the Ashanti Region. The president noted that the right of way was cleared along sections passing through forests, as well as across rivers and streams.
Award to be presented at the next ceremony
Mahama said that the 48th Engineer Regiment is to receive the national award at the next state awards ceremony. The ceremony is expected to be timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Ghana.
