Latvian President Rinkēvičs to travel to the US for UN General Assembly session

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs will make a working visit to the United States from September 17 to 28. He will take part in the opening of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York and the 75th anniversary congress of the Latvian Association of America in Washington.

According to LSM English, on September 18 Rinkēvičs will deliver a speech and participate in a discussion at the congress of the Latvian Association of America. The Latvian president’s address to the UN General Assembly is scheduled for September 23 at approximately 16:15 Latvian time.

Meetings at the UN

According to the Chancellery of the President of Latvia, Rinkēvičs will pay particular attention in his speech to the aggression of the Russian Federation — an aggressor state — against Ukraine, threats to the rules-based international order, as well as hybrid threats to Latvia and the countries of the region.

The president is also expected to take part in a meeting of the UN Security Council, of which Latvia is currently a non-permanent member. During the session, an annual meeting of the presidents of the Baltic states with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Polish President Karol Nawrocki is planned. The program also includes bilateral meetings with leaders of other states and media interviews.

Business program in California

Rinkēvičs has been invited to a reception hosted by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on the occasion of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Starting on September 24, the Latvian president, together with a business delegation, will hold meetings with representatives of US companies in Los Angeles and San Diego.

The main topics of the business part of the trip will be cooperation in defense and dual-use technologies, biomedicine, startups, and the film industry. On September 27, the Latvian president is expected to take part in celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of the Latvian School in Los Angeles and meet with representatives of the Latvian diaspora.
