The President of Slovakia called the end of the war the main condition for Ukraine's accession to the EU
Slovak President Peter Pellegrini stated that a diplomatic resolution to the war with Russia must be a key prerequisite for Ukraine’s further progress toward European Union membership.
According to the Slovak leader, achieving a just peace must remain the top priority for both Ukraine and its international partners.
Pellegrini also opposed any exceptions or fast-track procedures for Ukraine on its path to the EU. He emphasized that the countries of the Western Balkans have been meeting EU requirements and implementing necessary reforms for years, so all candidate countries must be subject to the same conditions.
The President of Slovakia stated that Bratislava would support Ukraine’s accession to the EU only after all criteria set for candidate countries have been met.
In addition, he spoke out against the idea of Ukraine’s associate or partial membership in the EU and noted that he could not envision EU expansion at the expense of a country currently at war.
At the same time, Pellegrini emphasized that if Ukraine fulfills all the necessary conditions for accession, Slovakia will support its membership in the European Union.
