The President of Iceland began a state visit to Estonia
Icelandic President Halla Thomasdóttir has begun a multi-day state visit to Estonia. She will take part in events marking the 35th anniversary of Estonia’s restoration of independence, according to ERR News.
In Tallinn, Thomasdóttir will hold meetings with Estonian President Alar Karis, Riigikogu Speaker Lauri Hussar, and Prime Minister Kristen Mihal. The parties plan to discuss bilateral relations, regional security, Iceland’s relations with the European Union, continued support for Ukraine, and transatlantic ties.
On August 19, the visit began with a welcoming ceremony at Tallinn’s Town Hall Square. The presidents will also participate in the Estonian-Icelandic Business Forum, dedicated to opportunities for cooperation in the economy and innovation.

The program includes a tour for the President of Iceland to learn about the activities of cyber training ranges, in particular the CR14 Cyber Range, as well as the laying of a wreath at the foot of the War of Independence monument. In the evening, Alar Karis and Sirje Karis will host a state dinner in honor of the Icelandic presidential couple at the Arvo Pärt Center.
On August 20, the presidents and their husbands will take part in the flag-raising ceremony on Toompea Hill, visit the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Maarjamäe, and greet participants at Family Day at the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. The following day, Thomasdóttir and her husband will visit Pelgulinn State Upper Secondary School, where they will be introduced to the AI Leap educational reform program. The visit will conclude with a farewell ceremony at Iceland Square, named in recognition of the fact that Iceland was the first country to recognize Estonia’s restored independence.
