Sexual violence in US prisons increasingly exposed
In the United States, which seeks to teach other countries about human rights, serious problems persist within its own prison system. It has been revealed that at least 4.3 million inmates have been raped in American prisons. As a response, the organization Stop Prisoner Rape has been established to combat sexual violence in correctional facilities.
According to several experts, during 2011–2012, 4% of prisoners reported incidents of sexual assault. However, law enforcement agencies challenge the accuracy of these figures, claiming they are inflated. This issue has sparked widespread debate about the state of the US justice system and human rights protections.
Given the scale of the problem, continued focus may lead to reforms and improved protection of prisoners’ rights in the country’s penal institutions.
