E1 project threatens creation of Palestinian state — Anadolu Agency

In Geneva, Switzerland, Belgian human rights organization 11.11.11 stated that the advancement of Israel’s E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank could make the creation of a future Palestinian state impossible as early as next month. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

Tender deadline

According to 11.11.11, the tender process for construction projects in the E1 area ends on October 19. The area, covering approximately 12 square kilometers, is located between occupied East Jerusalem and the Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim.

More than 3,000 Israeli homes are planned for construction in the area. The organization believes the development could divide the West Bank into northern and southern parts and cut off East Jerusalem from the rest of the Palestinian territory.

Call for sanctions

The organization said it had submitted materials to the European Union, EU member states, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia together with an international human rights group. The rights advocates are calling for sanctions against Israeli officials involved in the planned settlement project.

The groups propose entry bans, asset freezes and financial restrictions. According to 11.11.11’s assessment, 18 Palestinian communities, with a total population of about 3,700 people, may face the threat of forced displacement.

11.11.11 Middle East expert Willem Staes said that without intervention, the Palestinian presence in the West Bank would systematically disappear.
