The case involves two artifacts worth thousands of euros that the politician accepted from lobbyist Robert Bourgi; de Villepin himself called it a mistake but stated his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. The politician, known for his 2003 speech at the UN against the war in Iraq, plans to run in the 2027 elections with the new party “Humanist France, and his main rival, Édouard Philippe, is currently under a similar financial investigation.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will not appeal the rejection of his request to consolidate sentences in two cases. This means he must serve six months in prison in the so-called “Bygmalion case.”
