The process of Hungary releasing €6.6 billion in funds for weapons for Ukraine is still ongoing

Discussions regarding Hungary’s release of €6.6 billion from the European Peace Fund to EU member states for military support to Ukraine are still ongoing, and no specific timeline for resolving this issue has been set.

EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaja Kallas noted that with the appointment of a new Hungarian minister, progress has been made, and a compromise proposal regarding the use of these funds was put forward during discussions among EU defense ministers in Cyprus.

The question now is whether to focus more on providing direct aid to Ukraine or on actually reimbursing member states for the contributions they have already made for the transferred weapons, since the original idea was to receive compensation to share the burden. This new proposal still needs to be agreed upon by member states, so it is impossible to predict exact timelines. Through the European Peace Fund, EU countries receive compensation for artillery systems, ammunition, missiles, air defense systems, armored vehicles, fuel, medical equipment, and other supplies they provide to the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
