Putin stated that Russia has no objection to Ukraine joining the EU

Putin stated that Russia has no objection to Ukraine joining the EU

Vladimir Putin stated that Russia allegedly has no objection to Ukraine’s European integration and its move toward the European Union. At the same time, he once again voiced a series of grievances against the EU and accused the West of supplying weapons to Kyiv.

Once again, Russia’s position combines a formal “softening” of rhetoric with traditional political accusations against Ukraine and the European Union.

Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin stated that Russia allegedly does not oppose Ukraine’s European integration and its rapprochement with the European Union. “Russia is not against Kyiv’s European integration,” Putin said.

At the same time, this statement came against the backdrop of his other comments, in which he attempted to present Moscow’s position as supposedly “constructive,” even though it is accompanied by harsh criticism of the West.

Putin stated that the European Union, in his words, is allegedly well aware of the “scale of the costs of Ukraine’s reconstruction,” which could amount to hundreds of billions of euros. He also added that the EU could “facilitate a settlement” if, as he claims, it convinced Kyiv to make compromises instead of supplying weapons. “The European Union could facilitate a settlement by convincing Kyiv to compromise, rather than supplying it with weapons,” the Kremlin leader stated. Separately, Putin expressed concern that the European Union, in his view, “is turning into a military bloc.”

The Russian president also repeated a series of arguments regarding the situation in Ukraine that have become standard in Kremlin rhetoric. He claimed that the leadership in Kyiv is allegedly not interested in a swift end to hostilities, as this, in his words, could affect the political situation within the country. Similar statements have been made repeatedly by Russian leadership and usually accompany public comments regarding negotiations or international support for Ukraine.

Despite a formal statement that there are no objections to Ukraine’s European integration, Russian statements continue to criticize the EU and demand that Ukraine make “compromises.” Analysts have repeatedly noted that such statements often combine diplomatic rhetoric with political pressure and do not signify a change in Moscow’s actual position regarding Ukraine. Currently, official Brussels continues to support Ukraine’s European integration process, which is already in the preparatory stage for accession negotiations. Putin’s statement was quoted by the Russian propaganda agency TASS.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that he sees no contradiction between a peace agreement with Ukraine and establishing full control over Donbas. He also reiterated Russia’s readiness for negotiations but emphasized that compromises must come from both sides.
