The Council of the EU has extended the legal basis for sanctions against Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Council of the European Union has decided to extend the legal framework that allows for the imposition of sanctions against individuals who threaten the stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina. These measures target those who undermine the country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order.

The EU Council’s press service informed the European Parliament of this.

On March 30, the EU Council extended the “framework” for imposing targeted sanctions against those involved in threats to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and constitutional order of Bosnia and Herzegovina for another 12 months—until March 31, 2027.

This mechanism allows the EU to impose targeted sanctions against individuals or organizations in the form of asset freezes, a ban on the provision of funds, and a travel ban to the EU for individuals.

No individuals are currently on the sanctions list under this regime. The mechanism has been in place since March 21, 2011.

As a reminder, in 2020, the Chairman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, presented Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov with an ancient Ukrainian icon stolen by the occupiers in the Luhansk region. Its value is estimated at 12.5 million euros.

The Prosecutor’s Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina opened a criminal case regarding this incident.

On February 26, Dodik was sentenced to one year in prison and a six-year ban on holding the office of President of the Republika Srpska for defying the decision of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt.
