Russia may have violated Finnish airspace — Yle

The Finnish Ministry of Defense has reported a possible violation of the country’s airspace by a Russian military aircraft in the Gulf of Finland. The ministry stated that the incident is currently under investigation and that all circumstances surrounding the event are being clarified.

This was reported with reference to Yle.

According to the Finnish Defense Ministry, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, May 27, near the Porkkala area.

The Ministry of Defense noted that the Russian aircraft was likely performing a maneuver to avoid a thunderstorm, after which it may have briefly entered Finnish airspace.

In response, the Finnish Air Force promptly scrambled aircraft.

However, the ministry did not specify the exact type of Russian military aircraft involved.

Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hykkänen stated that an official investigation into the incident has already been launched.

It is being conducted by the Finnish Border Guard.

Finland plans to keep its border with Russia closed due to the threat of migration pressure.

The Finnish Air Force will conduct special exercises to repel drone attacks in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, as well as in the Kymenlaakso and South Karelia regions, which border Russia.

A delegation from the Helsinki Fire and Rescue Department in Finland spent four days studying the experience of Ukrainian rescue workers in dealing with the aftermath of war.
