Russia is sabotaging a UN resolution on opening the Strait of Hormuz — Bloomberg

The Russian Federation has come out strongly against a draft UN Security Council resolution that calls for the use of force to restore navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Bloomberg reports this.

Official Moscow views this document as an attempt to legitimize military action against Iran and hinder a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a meeting with his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdel Attia, criticized the initiative put forward by Bahrain, which was supported by Jordan and the Gulf states.

The proposed document contains provisions on “defensive measures” necessary to free the strategic waterway from the Iranian blockade.

The Kremlin, leveraging its status as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, effectively threatened to use its veto power to block this initiative.

According to the Russian side, any military intervention will only exacerbate the already critical situation in the Middle East.

“This resolution was either planned or will be used—though, of course, it was conceived with the best of intentions—to derail new and still very fragile opportunities for negotiations. Or it will be used to retroactively legitimize aggression against Iran,” stated the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Lavrov also emphasized that the text of the resolution ignores Tehran’s interests by failing to mention it as a “victim of aggression.”

This, according to the diplomat, will provoke a hostile reaction from Iran and ultimately destroy the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the armed conflict.

Currently, Tehran maintains full control over the strait, through which about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas is transported.

The blockade of the corridor was Iran’s response to the large-scale military operation by the U.S. and Israel, which has been ongoing for two months now.

Arab countries have sought a UN diplomatic mandate to potentially establish an international naval force or join existing operations.

As a reminder, oil prices are rising amid the escalation with Iran.

Additionally, the need for emergency medical care in Iran is growing significantly, while medical supplies are gradually running out and could be depleted if hostilities continue.

As a reminder, hopes for a quick end to the war vanished after U.S. President Donald Trump announced his intention to launch more aggressive strikes against the Islamic Republic.

As a reminder, in Iran, the B1 bridge connecting the capital Tehran with the western regions of the country was damaged as a result of airstrikes.

The U.S. has exhausted its list of key targets for airstrikes on Iran, so further actions are now in question. Despite this, Tehran continues to block the Strait of Hormuz, which is keeping tensions high in the oil market.
