Russia has revoked the accreditation of a Dutch correspondent — NOS

Russian authorities have revoked the press accreditation of the well-known Dutch correspondent Gert Groth Kurkamp, effectively barring him from continuing his professional activities within the country.

This was reported by NOS.

The journalist has long covered events in Moscow for leading media outlets, including broadcaster NOS, the newspaper de Volkskrant, and the Flemish television channel VRT.

Despite the revocation of his official work permit, the correspondent is currently still allowed to remain in Russia.

However, without valid accreditation, any journalistic activity on his part becomes impossible given Russia’s strict legislation. The situation surrounding Kurkamp prompted an immediate reaction from both the media community and at the diplomatic level.

The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially confirmed this move, calling it a “mirror response.”

A spokesperson for the ministry stated that the decision is a reaction to the actions of the Netherlands, which allegedly did not renew the residence permit of a Russian correspondent for the RIA Novosti agency. This organization has been subject to European sanctions since May 2024.

Representatives of the Russian Foreign Ministry clearly outlined the conditions for the possible restoration of the Dutch journalist’s status.

“We are ready to reconsider our decision if the Dutch government creates the necessary conditions for the Russian journalist to work there,” said the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The Dutch government has strongly protested against Moscow’s actions. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called this move “very regrettable and unjustified.”

It was also noted that diplomats had attempted to resolve the issue through consultations, but the Russian side decided to take radical action.

As a reminder, the Kremlin threatened EU countries with consequences for providing airspace to Ukrainian drones.

The Kremlin also pretended not to know about sending students to the war.
