Robert Abela was sworn in as Prime Minister of Malta for the third time
Labour Party leader Robert Abela was officially sworn in for a third term as Prime Minister of Malta during a formal ceremony in Valletta. President Miriam Spiteri Debono administered the oath to the re-elected head of government, who was accompanied at the event by his wife Lydia and daughter Georgia May.
This was reported by the Times of Malta.
This event was historic, as Abela became the first Prime Minister from the Labour Party to be sworn in for a third term since Dom Mintoff in 1981. This past weekend, his government was re-elected by a margin of 21,721 votes. The politician became Malta’s 14th prime minister in 2020, taking over from his predecessor Joseph Muscat, after which the Labor government was also successfully re-elected in 2022.
Overall, in the national elections held last Saturday, the Labour Party secured an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory, garnering the support of 51.8% of voters. Their main opponents from the Nationalist Party managed to secure 44.7% of the vote. Despite another decisive victory for the Labour Party, the final margin between the political forces narrowed significantly, as in the previous election in 2022, the ruling party’s lead stood at 39,474 votes.
Early parliamentary elections began in Malta on May 30. According to preliminary forecasts, the ruling Labor Party had the best chance of winning.
