Hammad Azhar’s family asks court to allow a meeting with him — Dawn

In Lahore, Pakistan, Ishrat Bibi, the mother of PTI leader Hammad Azhar, has approached the Lahore High Court, asking it to allow his family and lawyers to meet with him. Azhar is in police custody under physical remand in a case related to the events of May 9.

Petition to the court

The petition on behalf of Ishrat Bibi was filed by her lawyer, Abuzar Salman Niazi. As Dawn reports, a formal request seeking permission for a meeting had previously been submitted to the trial court.

According to the petition, the trial court did not issue an enforceable order on the matter and merely forwarded the request to the police. The document also states that the accused has the right to consult with the legal team and meet with family members.

Request for a meeting

The applicants are asking the Lahore High Court to intervene and give direct instructions to the relevant authorities to arrange a meeting between Hammad Azhar and his relatives and lawyers while he remains in police custody.

Earlier this month, Azhar was detained in Multan and handed over to Lahore police in connection with cases concerning the May 9 riots, including the attack on Jinnah House.
