Nigeria announces first telerobotic surgery — Premium Times Nigeria
In Nigeria, Redeemer’s Health Village, RoboMed Global and Nisa Premier Hospital announced that they had performed the country’s first telerobotic surgery. The procedure was carried out in real time: the surgeon controlled the system from a Toumai console at Redeemer’s Health Village, while the patient was at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja.
Kidney removal surgery
As Premium Times Nigeria reports, the patient underwent a telerobotic, robot-assisted radical nephrectomy of the right kidney — the removal of a kidney affected by a cancerous tumor. Telerobotic, or remote, surgery allows a surgeon to operate on a patient from a different physical location.
The operation was led by Professor of Urology and Transplantation Obi Ekwenna-Davis, who is a co-founder of RoboMed Global. According to him, the procedure lasted about three hours, with short pauses made during it to check the operation of the equipment and systems. The surgeon also said that the patient was in good condition and was expected to be discharged within 24 hours.

Specialist training
Redeemer’s Health Village head Adedamola Dada called the intervention the first telesurgical procedure in West Africa. According to him, such operations require reliable communication networks, high-quality equipment and trained specialists, while weather conditions can sometimes affect connection stability.
Redeemer’s Health Village and RoboMed Global plan to establish a robotic surgery academy to train doctors, surgeons, nurses, biomedical engineers and medical product specialists. Ekwenna-Davis said that within two years, the academy intends to train at least 150 surgeons. Nisa Premier Hospital founder Ibrahim Wada added that his institution has operated as a robotic surgery center in West Africa since November 2025.
