Police say attack on checkpoint in Pakistan was foiled — Dawn

Police in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan said they foiled an attack on the seasonal Sarga-Nalla police checkpoint on the border between the Diamer and Ghizer districts. As Dawn reports, the incident occurred on Saturday.

Shooting at the checkpoint

According to a statement by the Gilgit-Baltistan police spokesperson, about nine attackers opened fire on a police unit at the seasonal Sarga-Nalla checkpoint. The post is located in the jurisdiction of the Singal police station, near the Ghizer and Diamer districts.

Police officers immediately returned fire, the spokesperson said. According to him, the attackers used the difficult mountainous terrain and their positions at higher elevations before fleeing.

Police also reported that no law enforcement officer was injured during the shooting.

Security measures

Due to the security situation, police are taking measures to relocate the unit to a safer and more strategically suitable location. They also plan to deploy additional personnel there and provide them with the necessary logistics and equipment.

The department said the situation is being monitored at the district level and urged residents to report suspicious activity or individuals to law enforcement and cooperate with security agencies.

In April, Gilgit-Baltistan police detained 15 suspects during an operation against people linked to attacks on law enforcement officers. Earlier, at least three police officers were killed and five others were injured in an ambush on a police group near the Thore Valley in Chilas.
