Nkrumah family returns to Nkroful to preserve his legacy — MyJoyOnline
The family of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, has returned to Nkroful in the country’s Western Region and said it intends to take a more active role in preserving his ideas and introducing young people to them. The delegation at NkrumahFest 2026 was led by the politician’s daughter, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, MyJoyOnline reports.
Apology to Nkroful residents
Samia Nkrumah apologized to the residents of Nkroful for the family’s long absence from their ancestral home. According to her, the family went through traumatic experiences related to her father’s political activity and attempts on his life. She recalled seeing Kwame Nkrumah wounded and covered in blood after one of the attacks.
At the same time, Nkrumah said that the family had decided to return and contribute to Ghana’s development and unity. Three grandchildren of the first president attended the festival with her. She stressed that the family’s involvement is not limited to honoring a historical figure, but is intended to help preserve and understand his ideas for future generations.

A view of the first president’s legacy
Samia Nkrumah also spoke against what she described as negative interpretations of the overthrow of her father’s government in 1966. She mentioned the Kwame Nkrumah monument at the memorial park and museum in Accra, whose head, she said, was severed from the statue after the coup. In her view, the destruction of the monument and celebrations after the coup did not mean that all Ghanaians supported Nkrumah’s removal from power.
She said that the unveiling of a new Nkrumah monument at a roundabout in Sunyani was evidence to her of renewed interest in his views. At the same time, Nkrumah stressed that such symbols should serve not the worship of statues, but the preservation of the ideas they embody.
The family promised to continue supporting NkrumahFest. Samia Nkrumah noted the role of Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Ellembelle Member of Parliament Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, whom the source describes as the festival’s initiator. The event in Nkroful brought together members of the Nkrumah family, politicians, scholars, supporters of pan-Africanism, traditional leaders and young people.
