Russia is seeking €47.2 million in damages from Rheinmetall for breaching a contract signed 12 years ago

The Moscow Military Prosecutor’s Office, together with the joint-stock company “Garnizon,” which is subordinate to the Russian Ministry of Defense, has filed a lawsuit with the Moscow Arbitration Court against the German defense contractor Rheinmetall.

The Russian side is seeking to recover €47.2 million from the foreign company for a terminated contract regarding the construction of a military training ground.

Currently, the case is being heard in the capital of the aggressor state behind closed doors, with no press access.

The plaintiffs are officially demanding that the contract for the design, construction, and full equipping with modern equipment of the 333rd Combat Training Center of the Russian Ground Forces be declared terminated.

This large-scale facility was planned to be built in the village of Mulino in the Nizhny Novgorod region for the training of Russian military personnel.

German technologies were intended to significantly increase the combat readiness of the occupying army before the start of a major war.

The history of this military cooperation began in 2011, when the German company Rheinmetall and the former Russian state-owned company Oboronservis signed an official agreement.

The subject of the agreement was “the supply of a real-world training system and the provision of system engineering and quality control services.”

According to the initial plan, European engineers were to fully complete all work at the facility by mid-2014.

In addition, the Russian Ministry of Defense planned to purchase German laser firing simulators in large quantities to practice precision firing skills.

However, the successful implementation of this project was completely halted due to the start of Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine and the occupation of the Crimean Peninsula.

In response to this violation of international law, the German government officially announced that it was suspending all exports of defense technologies to the Russian Federation.

Berlin promptly revoked the previously issued permit for Rheinmetall’s participation in the construction of the military training ground in Mulino.
